100 days – Day 41: Sums and Sneakers

100 days – Day 41:  sums and sneakers

I cannot “do” mathematics.  Remarkably, I got a decent “O Grade” in Maths at school, much to everybody’s surprise (and mine too).  As a result, in my Fifth Year, it was decided that I should study it at “Higher” level.  It was a struggle, but I managed to scrape a pass.

But I can’t count.  So, in my first Presbytery (Stirling and Dunblane – latterly, just “Stirling”) after a year or thereabouts,I was made convener of the “Stewardship and Budget” Committee.  Try dealing with irate Kirk treasurers, some of whom were chartered accountants, explaining why their congregational financial contribution was so high…..

When appointed to that post, the first thing that I did was to buy a calculator.   In those far off days in the mid-seventies, they had just the most basic of functions, and were the size of a brick.

If only slip on sneakers (worn without socks) had been in vogue then, I would have been able to count, not just on my fingers, but toes also.

Now I mention all this because I’ve just been to buy foreign currency for my forthcoming trip – a combination of Turkish lira, American dollars, and Euros – and was totally bamboozled by what proportion of each should have been purchased, given the amount of Pounds Sterling I was willing to spend.

In the end, I decided to go with  English notes – it’s easier….. but……

…. I will be wearing my slip on  Merrell sneakers sans socks!
